I received my Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts-Theatre from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. While finishing my degree I gained great experience designing makeup for several stage productions, in addition to learning and exploring makeup effects.
This past year, I had the honor to travel abroad where I was able to join a makeup effects shop and experience the film industry. I spent my time painting prosthetics, which were used on set. Being something I always wanted to do and experience, the reality of the opportunity and what I learned was inspiring.
Some of my specialties are Fashion and Glamour Makeup, Performance/Drama Makeup, Hair and Wig Styling, Prosthetics Painting, and Makeup Effects. Through my experiences and education, I feel I am well-rounded in many areas of makeup application.
Additionally, my fine arts background and hands-on theatre experience has also provided a robust knowledge in set design and construction, painting techniques, design aesthetics, color theory, props and fabrication, lighting design, costumes, and wearable pieces.
Designing and applying makeup has always been a creative expression for me. It started as experimentation with different eyeliners, exploring color, learning technique, and using my artistic skills from drawing and painting.
Makeup to me is a vehicle for artistic expression and creativity on a living canvas. I enjoy the challenge of symmetry, detail work, and creating an original design. Finding inspiration online and in my everyday life, I like to design original makeup looks, and then utilize other elements of art completing a look with fabrics, hairstyles, and dramatic lighting and photography.
Designing makeup for theatre has given me the opportunity to gain great understanding of how makeup translates for an audience, different types of lighting, longevity, and setting makeup. Being the makeup designer for over 8 different productions also provided the opportunity to be a part of a creative team and collaborate with the director, costume, and lighting designers.
In addition to makeup design and application, I also have extensive experience in set concept design and construction, scenic painting, props and fabrication, lighting design and installation, costuming, and wearable pieces.
Taking beauty makeup further into imagination, I like to use objects like beads, feathers, and string to add to makeup application and enhance my designs. Using found objects, I also enjoy fabricating headpieces, crowns, and hair pieces to develop a full look.
Finding inspiration in music, books, fantasy, and science fiction, I like to design makeup that matches an expression or theme. This is the place where I find my skills and vision as an artist collide with makeup design and application. I have applied this type of creativity in theatre design by creating elaborate headpieces, masks, accessories and props, and wig and hair design.
Self-taught, I have explored making and applying different types of prosthetics: latex, polyfoam, foam latex, and silicone. I have made my own prosthetics sculpting out of clay, applying on myself or friends to strengthen my skills in application and safe removal.
I had the opportunity to travel abroad to learn and work in a makeup effects shop on a film set this past year. I spent my time painting foam latex prosthetics, learning how to properly layer paints for a realistic look, what materials to use, and how to mix paint and medium for different types of applications. I was honored to have the pieces I painted go to set to be applied and used. It was this adventure that solidified my career path.
